Feature Impact Monitoring

See health signals in their release context.

Checkout errors rise during a release. Explore the Release Health design that connects metric sources and guard conditions to webhook alerts, then brings trends and change context into the investigation.

A practical walkthrough with Checkout reliability

The story · Release Health · a design in progress

Checkout errors rise. The team needs the metric and release context together.

The Release Health design connects a metric’s source binding, guard conditions, and webhook alerts to an investigation with supporting trends and a change timeline. An isolated checkout example shows this flow while the capability is still being designed.

Connect a release to its health signals and alerts.

Follow the Release Health design from a metric’s data source to guard rules, webhook alerts, and investigation with release context.

Design preview · Release Health is still in design. These preview screens use isolated checkout demo data. Automatic rule checks, alert delivery, and background synchronization are not active in the shown build.

  1. 01Step 01 / 04

Connect the metric to its environment’s data source.

For Checkout error rate, define the result as a percentage and select the Prod source binding. The preview uses a Prometheus-compatible connection, a PromQL query, and a 5-second step. Its query runs while the page is open.

The metric has an explicit source, unit, and query context before it is attached to a release.

  2. 02Step 02 / 04

Bind a guard and the trends that explain it.

The Checkout reliability monitor pairs an error-rate guard with P95 latency and throughput trends. The example guard has warning and critical thresholds with sustained windows. The screenshot’s latest rule checks remain Not evaluated.

Each guard has an explicit condition and alert route. Supporting trends provide context for the investigation.

  3. 03Step 03 / 04

Send a webhook alert when the guard breaches.

In the planned flow, the monitor sends an alert to the matching rule’s configured webhook once its threshold and sustained duration are met. Warning and critical rules can use their own webhooks. The receiving service routes the alert to the release owner or the team’s response workflow.

A sustained threshold breach becomes an actionable notification, connecting the health signal to the team’s response.

  4. 04Step 04 / 04

Read the trend alongside the change timeline.

Open the metric to inspect its environment trend, freshness, and time window. The design places recorded changes beside the same period. This fixture has no recorded changes in range, so the rising error rate cannot be attributed to a particular release from this view alone.

Use the evidence to hold, investigate, or recover. A matching timestamp alone does not establish causation.

Whole-environment data does not prove a variant caused the change

The next decision

Confirm the scope before choosing a release action.

When a webhook alert arrives, check data freshness, environment and query context, then investigate the application and recent changes. The preview shows whole-environment signals; it does not establish that one flag variation caused a regression.
